S.M.A.R.T.E.R. Success
by Dr. Al Lippart

The Difference Between Having Goals and Being Goals
Multitudes of people have been disappointed when they tried to find happiness by striving for things they wanted to have. Criminals set goals to have things. Thieves want to have money. Addicts want to have drugs. Murderers want to have ultimate power over other people. Warriors fight to have treasures, natural resources, and territory. Dictators struggle to have control and power over more people. All of these individuals are taking something from someone else and seldom getting what they really want in return. If their goals were to be rather than to have, they would give rather than take.
The SMART system will definitely help you accumulate material wealth so that you will appear successful, but it might not help you feel successful. If collecting things has not fulfilled your life, perhaps you need to take a closer look at your past goals and those for which you are still striving. If having it all still leaves you in need, stop and realize that the real measure of your wealth is not how much you haverather, it is what you would be worth if you lost everything you own.
I have used the SMART system and it has worked very well. With this technique I have obtained most everything I ever wanted, including a car, a college diploma, a veterinary practice, a home, and even a family. Yet the SMART system did not help me get me what I ultimately desired.
Over the past decades, I have observed my patients and other animals and noticed how happy and content they seemed to be, most of the time. The animals owned nothing! No clothes. No houses. No cars. No jewelry. No boats. No recreational vehicles. No bank accounts. No stock portfolios. No nothing. They never bought anything. They never went shopping. Yet they seemed to be happy.
When I observed my clients and other humans, I noted that many of them were not happy. People griped about the weather, their families, their schools and jobs. They complained because they didnt have enough money, enough time, or enough of what other people had. Those folks lived in nice, secure homes, worked for decent employers, and seldom missed any meals. Most owned televisions, cars, or trucks, and a whole lot of stuff. They owned so much, yet continually pursued the one thing they lacked and animals naturally possessed.
Physical possessions can influence our happiness, but only if we choose to be happy. I believe most people want to be happy, but they are using the wrong goals to attain success.
When you stop to think about it, happiness seldom comes from having things. You cant have happiness; you must simply be happy. The simplest of animals know that life is not about collecting things. To be something is what really counts. Being is what life is all about.
"SMARTER Success is a great book about making goals. It shows steps and defines each one making it easy to understand and follow. It also teaches that setting goals is not something that you have to do, but rather, something that you should want to do from the heart."
